But often we probably don’t take a step back and see the full breadth of community activity that’s taking place – literally under our noses.

Pant Together have arranged a number of community events such as bingo and quizzes in Pant Memorial Hall and, along with the Pop-Up Pub taking place in the hall too, these give locals an opportunity for an evening out – especially now that the Cross Guns is closed and on the market.

There are a number of events that take place at both Pant Memorial Hall and Llanymynech Village Hall such as classes, concerts, sports and fitness activities.

Both halls are run and managed by volunteers from the local community and Llanymynech & Pant Parish Council is made up of local community representatives too.

Pant Autumn Bazaar has become a village fixture which not only raises important funds for the upkeep of Pant’s community asset but brings dozens of people together to chat and socialise.

Within a short distance we have rounders, bowling and football clubs as well as a golf club with social activities.

For many, amateur dramatics is their thing and the LADS (Llanymynech Amateur Dramatics Society) is a well know example of a vibrant drama company locally who have performed in both Pant and Llanymynech.

Local people often organise fundraising events for local and national causes they feel passionate about, which bring friends and neighbours together.

Our two parish churches and chapel all hold regular services as well as other events such as the regular Meet & Eat held by Morton Church in the Memorial Hall and a dementia-friendly sofa club.

Pant Women’s Institute is very active holding monthly meetings, with a wide range of speakers on numerous subjects. They are also open to new members.

Llanymynech Canal Wharf and the Shropshire Union Canal Society both have Montgomery Canal related activities and we shouldn’t forget Bryn Offa School too!

There are certainly dozens of other events and activities locally that we have missed but it’s fair to say that there’s a lot of community around here.

The thing that makes all these events possible and successful is volunteers.

Sometimes it may feel that we are isolated as a village and individually, but scratch the surface and there’s lots going on to get involved with.

About 40 people attended a meeting to discuss the idea of pop-up pubs in Pant and the meeting itself turned into just such an event as a burger van in the car park made the evening a very sociable occasion.

Locals discussed the future of the Cross Guns and everyone would like to see the pub reopen but in the short term agreed that a simple regular event in the hall would offer a great alternative.

The concept that locals favoured was a bring your own drink combined with a food van in the car park – ideally with different cuisines available over the year.

Said Sean one of the ‘Friends of the Cross Guns’: “It was great to see so many people at the Pop-up Pub. Many of whom would be and have been regulars at the Cross Guns. It was especially pleasing to hear that people said they would support similar events regularly in the future and we are going to try and set up dates for the next few months.
“Hopefully, the pub will open very soon but until then I think this will offer our community a way to come together.”

Meanwhile, a group called Pant Together met recently to discuss putting on a range of community activities in the village. Recently, Pant Memorial Hall has hosted events put on by members of Pant Together including quiz and bingo nights. The group want to build on these with a series of events for all ages. The pub has been closed for a while now and while Admiral Taverns are looking for new management to take it over, there’s a void for locals.

Said Sean one of the ‘Friends of the Cross Guns’: “Many of us miss the pub, good beer and meeting fellow villagers. Although we have a number of other excellent local pubs nearby, nothing beats having a local at the heart of the community.”

Recently, Pant Memorial Hall has hosted events put on by members of the community including quiz and bingo nights. These have been very successful raising much needed funds for charities including Mind and the restoration of the Montgomery canal.
The idea behind the meeting is to see if a more regular series of events can be put on while the pub is closed.

Added Sean: “It’s not the intention to compete with other pubs but rather to make sure that there are local events that people can get to easily to be part of the community.”

Members of the group have already suggested other events that could be arranged in a ‘Pop-Up Pub’ format and the meeting will investigate which ones might be viable and achievable.

“We are looking at holding events perhaps once a month to start with, but if enough volunteers come forward, this could be increased – it’s all down to the local community,” said Sean.

A spokesperson for the Friends of the Cross Guns group said: “We know only a small number of regulars gave us their opinions but it chimed with what we have long thought. The community would benefit from a country pub type interior and exterior with good home cooked food.

“Although community activities and entertainment scored less highly, these should perhaps be occasional add ins rather than priorities at the pub.

“We have asked Admiral Taverns to meet with us to discuss these findings in light of the high turnover in pub managers at the Cross Guns. We want to help them run a successful community country pub in the village or explore other possibilities for the future of the pub.”

The pub is currently only open for limited hours and Admiral Taverns are marketing the pub to find new managers. If you know anyone who might want to run the pub, please get in touch with Admiral Taverns or the Facebook group.

The Cross Guns is listed by Shropshire Council as an Asset of Community Value – a status it has been granted for the past ten years.

Over the past few years, the Cross Guns has had a number of tenants but Maureen and her team took over, just before the pandemic, and adapted to keep the pub going since.

The Cross Guns is listed as an Asset of Community Value, with Shropshire Council and as such, if the owners wanted to sell the building or change its use from being a pub in the future, the community would be given the opportunity to buy it.

There is a Facebook group for those interested in the pub and locals are being encouraged to join it to help support the pub.

The store which was previously listed when it became part of McColl’s has had a new application by local residents accepted so the store is once again listed as a valuable asset to the village and community of Pant.

East listing lasts five years and cannot be extended other than by reapplying for a listing.

The Council has confirmed its decision to relist the store, which means that the residents of Pant must now be given advance notice of any planned change of use which could result in the store no longer operating as a food store.

The convenience store, which also offers Post Office services, is used by locals on a regular basis and provides a vital service to the village as well as people passing by on the busy A483.

Pant shop joins Cross Guns in listing

Both McColl’s and the The Cross Guns Inn are now listed on Shropshire’s register of community assets – the pub is one of over 600 pubs listed as Assets of Community Value in England.

Shaun Fisher, who helped co-ordinate the application for the shop, said: “I am glad that Shropshire Council has relisted the village shop. During the pandemic, McColl’s was a lifeline for many local people and it is a great asset to the village.

“A pub, shop and Post Office are essential for many people in rural areas and Pant is very lucky to have all three – long may that continue.”

The store will be open from 7am to 10am and reopen at 5pm until their normal closing time of 9pm.

Both the Cross Guns in Pant and the White Lion at Llynclys will open their normal hours while Llanymynech Village Shop will be open from 8am to 10.30am.

Llynclys Farm Shop has announced on its Facebook page that it will be closed all day on Monday.

For several months new owners have been overseeing a major refurbishment of the property, including improved disabled access.

The new signage for the pub states it is a Country Pub and Dining so many locals will be intrigued to get back to this popular local.

Along with pubs in Pant and Llanymynech locals have a good choice of local eating and drinking establishments and the pubs are important in attracting tourists to the area.

Meanwhile, the Lime Kiln in Port-y-Waen which recently reopened only to close again is reported to have changed hands again so watch this space.
