The store which was previously listed when it became part of McColl’s has had a new application by local residents accepted so the store is once again listed as a valuable asset to the village and community of Pant.

East listing lasts five years and cannot be extended other than by reapplying for a listing.

The Council has confirmed its decision to relist the store, which means that the residents of Pant must now be given advance notice of any planned change of use which could result in the store no longer operating as a food store.

The convenience store, which also offers Post Office services, is used by locals on a regular basis and provides a vital service to the village as well as people passing by on the busy A483.

Pant shop joins Cross Guns in listing

Both McColl’s and the The Cross Guns Inn are now listed on Shropshire’s register of community assets – the pub is one of over 600 pubs listed as Assets of Community Value in England.

Shaun Fisher, who helped co-ordinate the application for the shop, said: “I am glad that Shropshire Council has relisted the village shop. During the pandemic, McColl’s was a lifeline for many local people and it is a great asset to the village.

“A pub, shop and Post Office are essential for many people in rural areas and Pant is very lucky to have all three – long may that continue.”

Eventually the collection grew and he had enough for the bench, but was uncertain where he could buy one and then needed a place to site it. He contacted the Parish Council for help, and wanted to know where it could go and what permission was needed.

Tommy was a keen follower of Council events, so the Parish Council agreed the bench would be best enjoyed in the playground at Pant, and the collection now amounting to £365, was banked in the Council’s account. Councillors gave their approval for the bench to be purchased from Plastecowood Ltd in Bodelwyddan at a cost of £345 plus vat, the Council pay vat, but it is reclaimable.

The environmentally friendly bench is made of recycled plastic and looks like old oak. It is a well built heavy seat and does not need any maintenance at all.

It needed to be transported from the company in North Wales to Pant, and Blue Box of Oswestry very kindly offered to collect it and bring it to Pant free of charge. Malcolm Lewis (builders) offered to install the seat at the playground, also without charge.

There will be the small cost of the engraved plaque, which will be covered by the £20 residue. If the plaque costs less than that, any remaining money will be donated to the Dogs Trust, because Tommy was certainly a dog lover, always seen walking his dog.

In a letter available to customers in the Pant branch, the Post Office explains that it is undertaking an ‘exciting programme of investment and transformation’ across its network to make branches more modern and convenient both for customers and the operators that run them.

The Post Office is talking to McColl’s about changing Pant Post Office to one of their new-style local branches and if this goes ahead it would mean that:

• Post Office services would be offered from a low-screened, open plan style service post integrated into the retail counter
• The branch would be open for longer: Mon – Sun 06:00 – 23:00
• Customers will still be able to get most Post Office products and services, however for a small number of services customers may need to visit an alternative Post Office, go online or telephone the customer helpline
• To get the new branch ready, it may need to close for up to seven days during September / October 2017 for refurbishment.

The Post Office would like to know what is important to its customers and would like you to tell them what you think, particularly on the following areas:

• Why you use Pant Post Office and what you like about it
• What you think about the proposed new-look Post Office
• What you think about the changes to opening hours
• If you have any comments about the change to the range of Post Office products and services at the branch if the change goes ahead
• If you have any comments about the potential closure period during the refurbishment or access to other branches in the area.
