9 COMMUNITY RIGHT TO BID FOR CROSS GUNS INN, PANT. Shropshire Council
have confirmed receipt of the Council’s intention to bid on Cross Guns Inn, Rockwell
Lane, Pant and In accordance with Section 98 of the Localism Act 2011, the full
moratorium period of six months has now commenced and ends on 20th April 2026, and
the protected period of 18 months expires on 20th April 2027.

The pub has been closed for a while now and while Admiral Taverns are looking for new management to take it over, there’s a void for locals.

Said Sean one of the ‘Friends of the Cross Guns’: “Many of us miss the pub, good beer and meeting fellow villagers. Although we have a number of other excellent local pubs nearby, nothing beats having a local at the heart of the community.”

Recently, Pant Memorial Hall has hosted events put on by members of the community including quiz and bingo nights. These have been very successful raising much needed funds for charities including Mind and the restoration of the Montgomery canal.
The idea behind the meeting is to see if a more regular series of events can be put on while the pub is closed.

Added Sean: “It’s not the intention to compete with other pubs but rather to make sure that there are local events that people can get to easily to be part of the community.”

Members of the group have already suggested other events that could be arranged in a ‘Pop-Up Pub’ format and the meeting will investigate which ones might be viable and achievable.

“We are looking at holding events perhaps once a month to start with, but if enough volunteers come forward, this could be increased – it’s all down to the local community,” said Sean.

If anyone knows of someone who might be interested in taking on the lease of the pub, Admiral Taverns would like to hear from them. A spokesperson said: “We are currently recruiting for a passionate new licensee to take over this fantastic community pub to ensure it can reopen as soon as possible and remain at the heart of Pant. For anyone interested, please give us a call on 01244 321 171.”

The pub has had a number of licensees over the past decade or so and villagers are hoping the next licensee can reopen the pub as the heart of the community.

Maureen Hale currently the licencee at the pub confirmed that she would be leaving the pub in due course.

Over the past few years, the Cross Guns has had a number of tenants but Maureen and her team took over, just before the pandemic, and adapted to keep the pub going since.

The Cross Guns is listed as an Asset of Community Value, with Shropshire Council and as such, if the owners wanted to sell the building or change its use from being a pub in the future, the community would be given the opportunity to buy it.

There is a Facebook group for those interested in the pub and locals are being encouraged to join it to help support the pub.

Steve Sant, the new owner, has set up a new Facebook page for the pub and has posted: “Hello everyone, we’re the new owners of the Lion. We’d like to quickly address the rumours about our recent purchase of the pub. Please be assured we have absolutely no intention on knocking it down or developing housing. In fact as you’ll see, we’ll soon be starting a major investment in the pub to bring it back to life as soon as possible.”

According to Steve there was never any intention to purchase the pub for development and that we’re really excited to be opening as soon as possible following refurbishment which will start in the next few weeks.

Said Steve: “The Lion is definitely going to stay as a pub under our ownership and we have never had intentions to get any sort of planning other than the development of the campsite, as a campsite.”

Local Treasure

The history of the pub goes back to the 13th Century, there was a toll house on the crossroads in the 16C and there are records of a public house since after 1840 when it was called the Red Lion. The building hasn’t changed appearance very much since the 1960’s and has been a familiar local site at the crossroads at Llynclys.

According to a post on the pub’s Facebook page, NHS test and trace has been contacted and has informed the pub that they will collect the ‘sign in book’ and contact people who have recently visited the pub.

The same post says that the pub is likely to be closed for the next 2 weeks.

The Cross Guns has announced that almost £250 was raised by and for three local organisations – the PTA at Bryn Offa School, Pant Memorial Hall and the Restore the Montgomery Canal! Appeal. All are to receive £60, with donations on the day to the canal group adding another £65.

Although the car boot part of the day didn’t pull in quite as many people as was hoped, the afternoon music event was very well supported.

Said Maureen from the pub: “We are really pleased at how the day went and it’s great to be able to support these local organisations with cash raised on the day. Due to the COVID-19 regulations at the time, we had to arrange the event at pretty short notice, but it was great to welcome more people into the pub’s gardens for the first outside performances of the year.

“Pantfest was our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the whole village for their support during the early part of the year when we were only open for takeaways.”

Recent changes to the regulations for pubs mean that the Cross Guns, along with all other pubs in England, will have to close by 10pm and will be restricted by law to table service only.

No table bookings of more than six are allowed and groups won’t be able to mingle with other people. You will need to give your contact details for future tracing if an outbreak is detected.

Staff will have to wear masks, as must customers if they are not sat at their table to eat or drink.

Added Maureen: “Times continue to be difficult for us all, but we are aiming to keep the Cross Guns at the heart of the community.”

The last few years have seen many changes in the village – as well as the country at large – some of which are very positive and others where the impact is yet to be seen.

We might be a bit biased, but we think a highlight of the past year or so has been the work undertaken at Pant Memorial Hall to update the facilities and to install the ceramic artwork as a permanent reminder of the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. We know that lots of people have commented very positively on it and the small garden developed in front of it.

The now annual Pant Autumn Bazaar was another success this year, raising over £600 towards the maintenance and upkeep of the hall. And just as important as the money raised, the Bazaar brought scores of local people together.

The developments at the Cross Guns fit into the category of ‘too early to tell’. With the current managers leaving in the New Year and Admiral Taverns advertising for a new tenant, none of us know how the future of the pub will pan out. A number of local people have formed a ‘Friends of the Cross Guns‘ Facebook group this year, to help support the pub, whatever its future.

Recent news from those trying to reopen the Montgomery Canal through Pant to join up with the water at Llanymynech has also been a little disappointing, as work to rebuild Schoolhouse Bridge seems to be being put off until 2021. Locals of the Cross Guns Inn in Pant have formed a ‘Friends of the Cross Guns’ group to bring locals together.

The Cross Guns is listed by Shropshire Council as an Asset of Community Value and was recently part of a group of 137 Marston’s pubs sold to Chester-based Admiral Taverns in a deal worth £44.9 million.

The Cross Guns now joins the White Lion in Llynclys, the Horseshoe Inn in Ardleen and approximately 800 other pubs as part of the Admiral Taverns group.

The new group can be found on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/groups/832694723829297 – and as well as existing online, it will aim to encourage people in Pant, and further afield, to support the pub by visiting it.

Initially, thoughts are that there might be a monthly informal ‘Friends’ evening, where people can meet and socialise.

The group is an independent initiative and is not an official group of either the Cross Guns or Admiral Taverns.

As an Asset of Community Value, the Cross Guns is listed with Shropshire Council and as such, if the owners wanted to sell the building or change its use from being a pub in the future, the community would be given the opportunity to buy it.

Commenting on the new group, Boyd Breen, a local at the Cross Guns said: “We are looking to keep locals involved with their local pub. Over the past few years, the Cross Guns has had a number of managers with varying levels of success. As the Cross Guns is the last pub in the village, we want to see more local people, as well as tourists, using the pub and we look forward to Admiral Taverns investing in the pub to serve the local community.”
