The long campaigned for Llanymynech & Pant bypass is not a priority project at present, says government.

At the January Llanymynech & Pant Parish Council meeting it was reported by Cllr Vince Hunt that the bypass which has been suggested as a way to alleviate traffic issues along the A483 through Pant, was currently not a priority for National Highways, the body that is responsible for strategic highways within England.

Plans for a bypass have existed for decades to move traffic from the main road through Pant to a newly built road that would probably need to be built across fields on the floodplain below the village of Pant, but is unlikely to bypass Llynclys or most of Llanymynech.

Cllr Richard P Marshall

Any Llanymynech & Pant bypass would be a National Highways led project with Shropshire Council as a consultative authority.

According to Cllr Richard P Marshall, who is Shropshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways and Regulatory Services, the government has informed National Highways that any new schemes, that have not officially had the funding allocated are not on the priority list at the moment.

Said Cllr Richard P Marshall: “National Highways and Shropshire Council would be keen to see this project come to fruition but as it is not currently funded, it is not on the list of future projects for them.

I have spoken with National Highways and they have stated that they will continue to promote the project as soon as the funding bidding process opens.”

In the past year, Helen Morgan MP has given her support too to a bypass citing congestion and traffic volumes.

While the bypass might not currently be on the cards, local people continue to campaign for improvements to the traffic on the A483. In the past there have been calls for traffic lights at the Llynclys Crossroads and another pedestrian crossing near Bryn Offa School in Pant, both of which could help calm traffic through the village.

It has been a long haul with applying for grants, getting quotes, working round supply chain issues and rearranging the design to cope with the quirks of the building – but the hall committee are delighted to announce that their Centenary Project is now well under way.

There are now 24 solar panels on the roof at Pant Memorial Hall which started generating electricity this week. There are also smart new heaters and a tanked hot water system running from the solar panels.

Said Sean, Chair of Trustees at the Hall: “We can heat the water during the day for later use, and once the batteries arrive our evening events will also be solar powered. In the meantime, the long daylight hours of summer will allow us to reduce our energy use from the grid. That means lower bills and a smaller carbon footprint.”

Solar panels at Pant Memorial Hall

The old storeroom at the pointy end of the Hall – nearest to the Tramway and telephone box – has been repurposed into a plant room for the water tank and inverter.

Work is due to start this week on refurbishing the old bar area and cleaning cupboard. Said Sean: “The bar area is perhaps the last 1980’s style part of the hall, so these works will make a huge difference both practically and aesthetically. Once the bar is completed we hope that more locals choose to host their events at Pant Memorial Hall.

“We have to thank our grant funders for making this possible: People’s Postcode Lottery and the National Lottery, and to everyone who play both games. This is a big project for a small hall like ours, managed entirely by hard-working volunteers and it will secure us well into our second century.”

You can see progress on the hall’s website and social media feeds, or visit the hall yourself by hiring it!!

Llanymynech & Pant Parish Council adopted a Climate Emergency Action Policy at its meeting in January 2022.

Drawn up to highlight some of the issues that the Parish Council can face during its work for the local community, the new Climate Emergency Action Policy was drafted with input from local residents before being formally adopted by parish councillors.

Covering issues such as biodiversity, flood risk and rural transport, the policy can act as a checklist for councillors when, for example they are considering their response to new development in the parish.

According to the policy, the Parish Council intend to promote the policy within the local community in a number of ways, including at meetings and with young people.

This is the full policy:

LLANYMYNECH & PANT PARISH COUNCIL – CLIMATE EMERGENCY ACTION POLICY

TRANSPORT

Rural Transport

– Improve rural provision
a.
